This unused embroidered length would have been intended to be used as decoration for a dress part. Chinese tailoring was often very economical with the use of textile fabrics, and the embroidery would have been made on leftover spaces on untailored lengths for dresses.

Fragments of a dragon Robe. Silk on woollen cloth; satin and stem stitches, Pekin knot, and some couched work. Chinese (Ch'ing Dynasty); 18th century; (Ch'ien Lung). Lord Macartney, as British Ambassador, presented 100 lengths of English cloth to Ch'ien Lung in 1793; this robe may have been made from the cloth. Vuilleumier Collection. T.150 to C-1948
