Silk tapestry (kesi) hanging with details of rocks, trees, water, vegetation and faces painted. The borders along the top and bottom, a lotus scroll on a blue ground, are separately woven and sewn on.
The scene is a Taoist paradise showing rocks, streams and pine trees set against a red sky. The central figure is Lao Tzu, the reputed founder of Taoism. He is wearing a robe ornamented with 'shou' symbols, has a gourd vase hanging from his belt and appears to be holding peaches. On the left of the scene is the Immortal Liu Hai with his toad. To the right of Lao Tzu are two further immortals, one with an alms bowl, the other with a gourd vase. The monkey and the peach tree on the far right of the scene are both common symbols of immortality in Taoist mythology.
