19th century (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
Theatre's jacket. Right-hand side fastening with two gilt buttons and a fabric tape, long and wide sleeves, straight cuffs, mid-legs length garment, very unusual collar (cloth has been crimped to create a close-fitting neck. Cord through a turned over top). The sides are open up to the arm-pits. Pink silk damask with self-patterned Buddhists symbols lining. Light blue silk satin embroidered in coloured floss silks (blue, greens, red, pink, yellow and white.) in satin, long and short and Peking knot stitch and gold thread in couched work.
The design consists of eight five-clawed dragons (three on the front; three on the back and one on each shoulder) chasing flaming jewels among tightly curled cloud bands, bat ant auspicious symbols as the Eight Precious Things. The lower part of the robe contains short lishui and waves among which peonies embroidered in Peking knot and couched work.
The unusual colour of the jacket for this kind of design, the very high slit are sides, the side fastening tapes, and the unusual close fitting neck testify it is probably a theatre costume.
