Place of origin |
Buddhist temple hanging of embroidered silk with silver-gilt thread, and lined with silk. Depicting a four-headed monster (two of the heads have three eyes) seated on the back of an unidentified animal. The monster wears a headdress resembling the head of a wild animal on the crown of which bears a sword. The base of the hanging is embroidered with cloud forms and there is a disc in each of the two upper corners, presumably representing the moon and the sun. The figures are heavily embroidered in a variety of textures mainly in long and short and satin stitches (partly raised) with laid and couched work, in silver-gilt thread and twisted cord on brown figured silk. The hanging is edged with a six inch border of blue figured silk. Lined with white silk.
