late 19th century (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Coat of black silk satin for a Han Chinese woman. The satin ground is heavily embroidered with silver and gold thread in couched work. Embroidered centrally across the chest is a four-clawed dragon holding the sacred pearl in its right claw. Lower down on both sides are two smaller four-clawed dragons which are pursuing the sacred pearl. The details are picked out in blue, white, red, yellow silks in stem and satin stitches. The design on the back is similar to the front.

The coat is front fastening with red stone or resin buttons. It has long and loose sleeves with straight cuffs and a small standing collar. The facings of the cuffs are made of a pale blue silk satin embroidered with butterflies and peonies in coloured floss silk.

The garment has a light blue silk damask lining with self-patterned flowers.
