Coat of navy blue silk satin embroidered with coloured floss silk in satin, Pekin knot and stem stitch. The main body is embroidered with eight large roundels containing peonies, lotus blossom and butterflies. Other embroidered motifs are scattered around them. The bottom of the robe is embroidered in shades of blue with the traditional lishui (standing water) pattern amongst which appear some rocks and flowers embroidered in shades of pink.

The coat is front-fastening with 5 loop and knot buttons. It has elbow-length, wide sleeves with straight and folded-back cuffs. The facings of the wide cuffs are made of a light blue silk satin band embroidered with large butterflies and peonies. The facings also include a small orange ribbon and a black bias-cut satin band.

The coat has a light blue silk satin lining.

Collected by the donors' uncle: Captain Reggie Peel of the Queen's Troop, 2nd Life Guards, who was killed in the South African War.

The use of the batuan (eight medallions) composition and the waves/rocks combination at the bottom of the skirt confer a more formal aspect to this informal coat since it recalls the pattern of an official robe.
