Kesa (Buddhist priest's mantle) woven in blue silk with a repeat pattern of phoenixes in roundels and paulownia leaves in colours and gold on a dark blue ground. It is a seven-column kesa. The parts are cut from a whole cloth, in accordance with the Buddhist tradition, and then re-arranged in a patchwork design. The garment is lined with cherry red plain weave silk, perhaps not the original lining.
