Object history
Almost certainly produced to commemorate the visit of Richard Nixon to China on February 21, 1972. The visit was the first major event in the "normalisation" of relations between China and the U.S., brokered behind the scenes by Henry Kissinger and Zhou Enlai, following initial moves of "ping-pong diplomacy" when the U.S. table-tennis team visited China on a goodwill mission in April 1971.
