This covered dish was used to hold food or sweetmeats. It is decorated with lotus flower petals and the handle on the lid is in the form of a lotus bud. Malay silver is often skillfully decorated with embossed and chased patterns balanced by blank spaces to accentuate the ornamented areas.

Dish and cover, silver with chased floral and foliated ornaments, Riau Islands, Indonesia, 19th century
Physical description
In the centre of the dish is an open flower surrounded by foliage on a stamped ground enclosed within a circular border of a cord-line; round the edge of the base is a band of open flower motifs on a stamped ground; round the edge of the dish is a design of embossed pointed ovals enclosing engraved flower and leaf motifs.

The cover is dome-shaped surrounded by bands of engraved foliage and embossed pointed arches. At the top is a circular pointed petal design surmounted by a pointed knob.
