Fragment of hand-painted and resist-dyed cotton (chintz). Remnant from a length of piece-goods (yardage). On a white ground is disposed a repeating pattern of large and rather clumsy floral sprays, reminiscent of woodcut illustrations in European books of an earlier period. Each spray consists of a bouquet of several different flower, including two pinks or carnations and possibly a Persian flower. The sprays occur in staggered rows, with a small repeating "island", having four tufts of leaves or grass, with a flower and leaf spray in the centre, in the intervals.
Colours: White ground, patterned in blue, green (overpainted), red, violet and yellow. The green and yellow are faded but easily seen. Probably for Dutch costume
