Girdle

18th century (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Girdle (patka) of unbleached or yellowed fine cotton, embroidered with coloured floss silks and gold and silver wire. The patka is of fine, closely woven calico (not as transparent as muslin) which in places retains a surface "chintz" glaze, implying that it has been calendered. The embroidered design, mainly in darning stitch, follows three normal sequence of decorated pallau and side borders with a plain field, three narrow guard borders separating the pallav from the field. The pallav design consists of a diaper or (11-12) staggered rows of stylised leafy sprigs, in light green and dark blue silk. The guard borders have a scrolling leaf and stem pattern in the same colours. The guard borders are outlined in flattened gold wire/foil, laid and held in place by widely separated stitches of peach-coloured silk. All the embroidery is outlined in fine twisted gold thread. The embroidery is worked over a stamped pattern.
