Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
This package of dyed wool thread has remained wrapped just as it was received in 1871. It was donated to the India Museum by Major General Goldsmid, who collected it during his service as Arbitrator on the Perso-Afghan (Sistān) Arbitration Commission. Goldsmid collected a variety of everyday objects as samples of the productions he encountered on his march from Teheran to Gwadar. Kirmani wool was at that time greatly in demand by the shawl industry in the Panjab, where it was used in place of more expensive wools from Kashmir.
