Rectangular sample of woven checked blue and white cotton, complete selvedge to selvedge, cut at both ends. Received as a bundle of 24 pieces (5266:1 to 24(IS)), sewn together at two corners.

  • INDIAN TROUSERING SAMPLES Indian weavers produced a huge variety of woven patterns, as this bundle illustrates. The 24 samples imitate European fabrics, and catered for Europeans living in India or Indians wanting to emulate Europeans. Exhibited in the Paris Universal Exposition of 1867, these samples represent a market which European manufacturers could potentially take over with machine-made exports.
