Sri Devi

Figure
Place of origin

The figure represents a sitting goddess, probably Sri,sitting in lalitasana pose with her left leg hanging down and holding a lotus flower in her right hand. She wears a breast band and her left hand is in abhaya mudra. She wears a tapering conical headdress and a lower garment decorated with rows of rosettes within wavy bands She may have sat on the left hand side of a Vishnu image as part of larger temple shrine. There are crudely cut holes of a probable later date in the base for processional use. This figure appears to be a pair with IM.388-1924, an image of a goddess, likely to be Bhu Devi. The two goddesses would have presumably sat either side of an image of Vishnu as part of a temple shrine..

Object history
Transferred from the India Museum in London to the South Kensington Museum (now the V&A) in 1879. The 1880 inventory register describes the figure as Devi or Durga but it records the The India Museum Slips number as 9050, but this number describes a figure of Durga with a lion which is clearly incorrect.
