Figure

1775-1850
Place of origin

A good, small, typical south Indian Nataraja image, cast on one piece with its arch and base. Shiva holds a damaru and flame in his upper hands, stands on a crawling dwarf representing ignorance, his left leg and two other arms in dance poses. The flames arch narrows at its bottom. The base is classically south Indian, with an engraved lotus above a rectangular plinth, its lower level also engraved with stylised lotus petals. Slender, elegant modelling and good dark bronze colour but little wear so it is unlikely to date before the late 18th century.
