Figure

mid 19th century (made)

The figure is that of a crowned Buddha seated in "bhumisparsa-padmasana mudra" (earth-witness lotus position). The bronze of the feet and the hands and the face is left clear, the rest being covered with gilt lacquer having raised ornamentation set with pieces of coloured mirror glass. The crown, which is separate, is made of cut sheet metal and wood similarly ornamented. There are other decorative pieces made of sheet metal and ornamented in the same way attached to the front. A characteristic of the treatment of the robes is the way the ends of folds are drawn to a point and curved upwards.
This is identical with similar treatment of parts of the Burmese Shrine - IS 11-1969

Object history
Mandalay, possibly from the same workshop as the Burmese Buddhist Shrine - IS 11-1969
Quote from note in paper records "A fine example of mid-19th century Burmese image-making, almost certainly from the same workshop as the large Burmese shrine bought 5 yeas ago. It is a perfect replacement for the rather tawdry Buddha-image which came with the shrine, and as this newly acquired image is typical of the work done under Court patronage, its original association with the shrine cannot be ruled out".
