Historical context
The combination of weft ikat with additional weft decoration (in this case gold brocading), particularly on silk, is associated with the Palambang and Aceh districts of Sumatra. The influence of imported Indian textiles is reflected in the layout of the design, which is divided by the gold brocading into a field with deep end-pieces and a series of borders, broad and narrow.

Rick silk and gold garment-pieces of this kind, reserved for ceremonial wear, generally originate from prosperous areas with an old-established sea-trade. The patterns are mainly geometrical, having elaborated tumpal (triangular) designs in their borders.
