Costume doll representing a zemindar (land owner) from Varanasi. Unidentified armature wrapped with string and covered in cotton fabric. Robe (jama) of sheer magenta silk with brocaded silver-gilt wrapped thread butis and trimmed with silver gota and metal-wrapped thread, with decorative ties in silver gota on the left side. Waist sash of green silk chiffon trimmed with gota. Red cotton turban decorated with metal-strip, metal-wrapped thread, sequins and a fringe. Hair of black cotton threads. Face with embroidered eyes, eyebrows, mustach, tilak and mouth. Earrings of seed pearls and red glass bead attached to both ears. Necklace with remaining central flower of foil with a green centre and remains of adhesive indicating lost portions. Further remains of adhesive on turban, fingers of left hand indicating lost jewellery and ornaments. Holding a large flower of silver-gilt gota with sequin in the centre. Fingers and toes tipped with red fabric.
