Suzani

Place of origin

Rectangular hanging (suzani) made up of five panels of white cotton stitched together, embroidered with silk. Field pattern of a trellis made up of green, serrated leaves, containing large floral sprays in shades of pink, yellow and purple. Main border of large floral palmettes with minor borders of red flowers and dark blue scrolls. Edged on three sides with orange and white striped silk and cotton fabric, and on one end (and part of one side) with multi-coloured silk and cotton ikat fabric. Unlined.

Acquired by Caspar Purdon Clarke in 1881-2, in Lahore, Punjab. 1883 Register entry: 'QUILT. White cotton. Embroidered in various coloured silks with a repeating trellis pattern containing flowering sprigs, with a border of floral ornament. Lahore Punjab. 19th cent. L. 8 ft. 9 in., W. 5 ft. 5 in. Bought, 25 pounds'
