Signed 'Willem van Heemskerk. 11 Decemb: 1684'; inscribed 'Nutten sonder krassen' (Eat silently, i.e. keep quiet when making gains) and 'Die van sijn vangst veel schettert, krast en swest, Valt vaek de brok voor s neg[???]er uit het nest' (He who brags about his success, often loses his gains), both quotations are after the Dutch poet and statesman Jacob Cats (1577-1660).
