Shuttle

probably 19th century (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Shuttle from a workbox (needlework implement), probably for tatting. Carved in low relief from a single piece of wood, cut away in such a way as to produce two virtually identical semi-lenticular leaves forming the top and bottom halves of the shuttle, and connected in the middle by a core of the wood. The thread for tatting is wound on this central core. The top and bottom are carved with an identical motif of central lotus medallion with a flowering and foliated plant with twin buds on either side of it, and with a dentillated narrow guard border.
