Object history
Three plaques like this one would have been strung in a necklace, possibly of Gujarati origin. A necklace of this sort, with very similar plaques but in gold, is depicted in a painting by Edward Poynter of 'Helen of Troy', exhibited in 1881. A necklace by Carlo Giuliano (V&A, Museum number M.9-2011) made in about 1881 was also modelled on this type of Indian necklace.
