This crutch handle made within the Mughal empire in the 18th century has been fashioned in nephrite jade and has been expertly carved with flowers and leaves. The fact that such a functional object has been fashioned to such a high standard in nephrite suggests that it was made for a wealthy or important person.

Crutch handle, grey nephrite jade, carved and pierced with flower and leaf design, Mughal, second half 17th century
Physical description
Crutch handle of a flattened "U" form, fashioned in greyish white nephrite jade with fine black inclusions, pierced at the extremities in the form of flower-heads. It is deeply incised to indicate layers of petals, which are on short stalks rising from leaves below. The centre of the underside has a flower in low relief, with a circular hole in the centre for the crutch to be attached.
