ca. 1940 (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
An example of Burmese type repousse, engraving and chasing silver work resulting in decoration of richly textured and high relief which has been applied to an article of European style and for Western use. It is not marked with the workshop name or logo as is sometimes the case.
Circular form supported on four ball and claw feet, with a cavetto and broad rim.
The design is of a central perched peacock surrounded by concentric running borders of acheik and lotus leaf patterns; an inscription to Major and Mrs. Day and one with 12 pairs of differently posed Burmese figures within cuspid arches.
The rim is decorated with the Burmese signs of the Zodiac for the months of the year within cuspid arches alternating with quatrefoils filled with the gyo-shit-lan (eight planets) design of animals for each day of the week and the occasional decorative peacock.
