Physical description

An album of 59 bound pages of ruled paper mainly containing ephemera concerning outer space and space exploration. The album is covered in the Lunar Rocket fabric designed by Eddie Squires and manufactured by Warners in 1969. The contents include collecting cards, book covers, magazine pages, stamps, cartoons, food packaging, toy packaging, car and furniture advertisements (including one for the Djinn chair- see CIRC.202-1969), printed invitations, wrapping paper, stationery, postcards and sew-on clothes patches. Most of this material is contemporary with the album but some is from the middle decades of the twentieth century. The album also includes a few photographs of Eddie Squires, his drawings, collages and textile designs and original children's drawings.

Labels and date

Eddie Squires collated the diverse materials which inspired his designs in nine large scrapbooks. This page records the preponderance of space imagery in stamps, household objects, architecture and films like Barbarella around the time of the first moon landing. Many personal items are also incorporated in the scrapbooks, including letters from friends, photographs and notes on events or dreams experienced by the designer. You can see other scrapbooks by visiting the Print Room in the Henry Cole Wing. [2001]
