Stemcup

1550-1600 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Stemcup of porcelain. The bowl has rounded sides spreading to turned-out lip; the stem is an almost straight hollow cylinder, spread slightly at the foot. The foot-rim is unglazed, with adherent grit. Painted inside the bowl in bright blue is a medallion with a scholar seated under a rock with overhanging trees; a lozenge border encircles the lip. Round the outside above a 'lotus-panel' border is a scene in which scholars appear viewing paintings, discussing texts, playing chess and waiting for a concert. There is a 'stiff leaf' pendant frieze on the stem.
