Object history
From Register:
The subject shown is almost certainly San gu mao lu 'Three visits to the thatched cottage', in which Liu Bei (d. AD 222) visits Zhuge Liang (AD 181-234) three times in an attempt to persuade him to act as his adviser.

The locus of the phrase is San guo zhi. Shu zhi. Zhuge Liang zhuan, and the more popular version, giving rise to its currency not only in the theatre but also in the applied arts, is San guo yan yi, chapter 37.
