Costume design for Alkena in Act 3 of "Amphitryon 38". The design depicts a full length female figure with right hand on hip and left arm extended. The figure wears a pleated, full length white shift with gold belt, and a gold band beneath her breasts. She wears a gold and white scarf draped across the front of the neck which hangs over the shoulders, gold bangles at the wrists, and large gold earrings. Her hair is dressed in a "Roman" style and is crowned with a circle of white roses. Annotated by artist.

Object history | This costume design by Anthony Holland is part of an extensive collection of designs donated to the Theatre Museum by the artist in 1996. The design was executed for a production of Jean Giraudoux's play Amphitryon 38 held at the Oxford Repertory Theatre, ca. 1939. Historical significance: An early example of work by a prolific stage desinger who's career spanned nearly 50 years. |
