Physical description | 1931 Description: Sash, woven with narrow stripes of red, edged with a thread of white, on a dark blue ground. At either end is a short fringe of twisted threads. 1975 Description: Man's sash-belt. There are many variations of men's striped sashes from many different villages. Basket weave (both cotton warp and cotton weft are paired). The warps are set close together, therefore forming a warp-faced fabric. The weft is blue. Technical Details (1995) Warp: (i) blue cotton; Z-spun, unplied, paired threads. (ii) red cotton; Z-spun, unplied, paired threads. (iii) white cotton; Z-spun, unplied, paired threads. Weft: blue cotton; Z-spun, unplied, paired threads. There is no additional strengthening along the selvedges, simply paired warp threads and no additional strengtheneing at the lower and upper edges, just paired weft threads. Fringe: twisted warp threads, knotted at the lower end. |

The blue is indigo and red is Palo de Bresil.' Ann P Rowe, Curator of Western Hemisphere Textiles, The Textile Museum, Washington DC (personal communication 1997): 'Santa Caterina Barahona is immediately adjacent to San Antonia Aguas Calientes. I would think that either community would be a possible source at that period.' |
