Box of five pieces of sugi; mitred corners. Lid of identical construction but the top edges are bevelled. The sides of the box are covered in clear lacquer; all the other surfaces are lacquered dark brown-black. On the lid the underneath and the bevelled surface are lacquered dark brown-black; the other surfaces are clear-lacquered. The interior is divided by two detachable interlocking pieces of wood in a cross shape; these too are lacquered dark brown-black. Two of the four compartments formed by the cross are fitted with detachable covers for boiled rice; they are square with one corner cut off for ease of lifting and are of plain wood.
