Physical description

Lidded writing box (suzuribako) of squared form and with rounded corners and an overhanging lid, decorated with a sleeping tiger, broom and a rolled scroll in applied wood and glazed pottery on a black lacquer ground and underside. The inside of the lid is with autumn leaves and pine needles in glazed pottery and gold takamaki-e lacquer on a mura-nashi-ji lacquer ground, and the interior of the base is divided into three compartments by the addition of two vertical dividers of wood covered in black lacquer, edged to the top with gold lacquer, all on a mura-nashiji ground. A rectangular inkstone, which is inscribed on the back, fits into the middle vertical section of the box's base.

Marks and inscriptions

'Made by Ken'ya and Kozan in the style of Haritsu' and the date 'Kaei second year [= 1849]'.
The Haritsu mentioned refers to Ogawa Haritsu (1663-1747)/ Ritsuo. According to an anscription on one of Ken'ya's inro, he calls himself 'the last pupil of Ritsuo'.
