This is one of a pair of sleevebands. Embroidered sleevebands such as this one were ornamental haberdashery, made to be sewn onto the sleeves of Chinese womens' robes or dresses during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). Commonly-used ornamentation vary from generic Chinese landscapes to scenes from Chinese tales, or motifs of birds and flowers.

Physical description
Pair of sleevebands for a woman's robe. Elephants, lions, leopards and cats in medallions among flowers, embroidered in coloured silks and gilt thread (Peking stitch, stem stitch and couched work) on white silk satin.
