Miyoshi started studying lacquer-making in 1975 while still at university. Her teacher was the late Sasaki Ei(1934-84), a specialist in the use of mother-of-pearl. Miyoshi has exhibited at the Traditional Crafts Exhibitions since 1984. Her work is interesting both for the inventiveness of its design and for its imaginative use of mother-of-pearl. The extraordinary range of colours seen on the box results from the use of many different varieties and thicknesses of shell in combination with numerous colours of metal foil backing.
