This pedestal tray was for holding presents laid before a couple at their wedding. It belonged to Tengku Ambung, the mother of Sultan Abdul Rahman (ruled 1883-1911), the last sultan of the Riau-Lingga kingdom. The Sultan was deposed by the Dutch colonial government and lived in exile in Singapore from 1911.

Physical description

Pedestal-tray (dulang berkaki) of silver. Circular tray with sunk centre and flat lobed rim. Drum-shaped pedestal with expanding bowl-like foot with flat lobed rim. The tray has a pattern of a central circular panel with brattished outline, encircled by concentric bands of scrolling flower and leaf stems, and conventional flowering shrubs and birds. On the pedestal and tray are band of a floriated tumpal-motif.

Object history note

Nos. IM.15 to 27-1934, previously on loan since July 23rd, 1920, from A. F. Lake, who died in 1924. The loan was continued by his Trustees. See Nominal File: A.F. Lake and RPs 1934/1096 & 1570.
