Object history
IM.25-1924 Register entry: 'LADY'S DRESS, in two pieces of fine muslin embroidered in white cotton thread ('chikan work'). DACCA, BENGAL PRESIDENCY; second quarter of the 19th century. Dress, L.3ft.9in., W.across sleeves, 4 ft.11in. Skirt, L.4ft.8in., W. round bottom, about 16ft. Given by Miss R. McPherson. The dress is short-waisted, long sleeved with puffs on the shoulders. The edges of the sleeves and the skirt are scalloped. The embroidered pattern consists of undulating stems of diamond-shaped leaves, and similar single leaves arranged as a diaper over the top-skirt. The full underskirt, not completed, is formed of four wide panels and by four narrower panels, sewn together. The skirt is embroidered with 12 repetitions of a triangular device of conventional flowers and leaves, a diaper of single leaves and on the bottom and on the attached border undulating stems of leaves. The Costume was made for an European Lady of the period 1830-1850.'
