Materials and techniques | Greyish green nephrite jade and beige to grey nephrite jade, fashioned using abrasives and abrasive-charged tools. |
Brief description | Cover for a box, octagonal, domed, handle missing, greyish green nephrite jade, inlaid and carved beige to grey nephrite, India |
Physical description | A cover for a box, with the main body having been carved in one piece in greyish green nephrite jade. It has a slightly rectangular, octagonal outline and is domed with a flat central panel that is linked to the edges by eight, slightly convex panels that have parallel top and bottom faces and with sides that taper in towards the top. These sloping panels have been carved with recesses which have then been inset with shaped and carved pieces of beige to white nephrite jade with two similar designs of flowers and leaves, with the each design appearing on alternating panels. The design on each panel is framed within engraved borders that have been filled with an unknown black material but which is probably lac. The flower and leaf stems and fine line detail are also provided by engraved and filled channels. The central panel also has engraved cavities that have been inset with eight flowers (one is missing) that are linked via fine, swagged channels, and the design too lies within an octagonal ring, In the centre of the top panel there is an empty, oval cavity into which the handle was most probably set. |
