Object history | Purchased from Sir Henry E. Dering, Bart. Register entry 15 April 1920. |
Historical context | The Nominal File (MA/1/D952 includes a minute from C. Stanley Clarke dated 23 February 1920 in which he writes "This object, taken from an old house at Agra (formerly the residence of a wazir or a Mogul official of high degree) was purchased by the Late Captain Murray – son-in-law of the present owner – and special sanction had to be obtained from the Government to bring it home". The design of the carved flowering plants suggest that the door is not earlier than the mid-17th century, and is probably later. |
