This design was part of a preliminary scheme for the Waterloo Palace devised by Benjamin Dean Wyatt and Charles Smirke for the Duke of Wellington. Intended to rival Blenheim, this first scheme of 1814-5 proved too grandiose for the Duke's taste; Wyatt subsequently produced a relatively more modest scheme between 1817 and 1818. However, this was also abandoned when the Duke decided instead to purchase and enlarge Apsley House in London, where Wyatt designed the interiors
