This vase is an example of the 'lampwork' technique. Glass workers melt tubes or canes of glass over a single flame or 'lamp' and manipulate them into shape. This piece is typical of lampwork glass made in the eastern German area of Thuringia. Glassworks here specialise in fancy decorative items, from figures to Christmas tree decorations, and also produce glass tubes and phials used in laboratories.
