Folding-fans that bear calligraphy or paintings have been collected in China as works of art since the Ming dynasty (1368-1644). The four characters may be read as 'Cool breeze caresses'. They are written in an elegant and effortless style.

Lin Xiaozhi (1927-) is a native of Nanjing. He studied painting under Huang Binhong (1865-1955) in his early years. His calligraphy is influenced by his father, Lin Shanzhi (1898-1989) the most accomplished Chinese calligrapher in the second half of the 20th century.
