Cap

early 20th century (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This simple cap would be worn indoors or informally by a Muslim man in Lucknow in northern India. It is made of two half-moon shapes cut out of woven cotton fabric, and has a simple pattern made by the 'jamdani' technique. This involves extra weft threads being added by small spools to individual areas of the weaving while it is on the loom. The technique is usually associated with Bengal, but seems to have migrated to Lucknow in the early 19th century.
