Cup

Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This small cup was made in Dehua in Southern China. White porcelain Dehua wares first appeared during the Northern Song period (960-1126) and is still produced in Dehua today.

Dehua was particularly famous for the production of white porcelain figurines. The 16th century saw a surge in the production of moulded figurines. It is widely thought that Dehua wares reached the pinnacle of their production in the 17th century.

As well as figurines a range of porcelain vessels were made at Dehua, for eating and drinking such as teapots and cups. Small objects were also made for the scholar's desk. These included brush washers, water droppers, brush rests and seal stamps.

This lotus leaf cup has a small crab applied to the base of the interior, with a straw in the form of a hollow stem on the exterior, to allow wine to be drank out from a hole beneath the crab. The main body of the vessel was moulded. The crab was hand modelled and applied separately.
