JAPANESE; c.1800-1850
335-1877
The Tokugawa shogunate severely controlled Japanese contact with the outside world and from the mid 17th to the mid 19th century. The Dutch were the only Europeans allowed trade with Japan. The Japanese were fascinated by the clothing and customs, as well as the ships, of the Dutch traders and this interest is reflected in the decoration on this bowl.(As at 2005) |
