Bowl

1573-1620 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This bowl is covered in a high fired monochrome blue glaze. The decoration of carp and aquatic plants is painted on top of the glaze using a thick white slip. Both the interior and the base are glazed white and the base carries a six character Wanli reign mark in underglaze blue. The use of contrasting slip decoration on monochrome grounds became popular during the Wanli (1573-1620) period, though they were based on precedents first successfully established during the Yuan period (1279-1368).
