Object history | Two services with the Peers arms were made in 1731; the invoices have been preserved. That in underglaze blue was invoiced on 19 November 1731 at 40 taels for 255 pieces (an average of approximately one shilling per piece). The other service was enamelled, shipped by the 'Harrison' which left Canton on 8 January 1732, and invoiced on 10 December 1731 at a cost of 228 tales for 524 pieces (an average cost of just under three shillings per piece). Both services were invoiced to Charles Peers Esq. of Chislehampton Lodge in Oxfordshire, son of Sir Charles who had been Lord Mayor of London in 1715. (His great grandson, Lieut George Watt, R. N., was killed on the 'Shannon' during its famous action with the 'Chesapeake'). |
