Artist/Maker
Place of origin

The scene in the central medallion, with five putti playing with baskets of grapes, was copied from a print made by the engraver Francesco Bartolozzi (1728-1815) after a design by Giovanni Battista Cipriani (1727-85). It was part of a set of allegorical depictions of the four seasons, including this scene representing autumn, published in London in 1782.

The same scene was also used to decorate Wedgwood pearlware, and probably copied in China afterwards. The border decoration, with floral garlands and festoons of leaves, reflects the more formalised taste of the period, while the small crest with a "marten" may refer to the Martins, an English merchant banking family.
