This bowl was given to the V&A by Kenneth Dingwall, thanks to whose enthusiasm for Japanese ceramics the Museum benefited greatly during the early years of the twentieth century. The enamel colours are typically Kutani, but the design has more in common with Kangxi 'painted on the biscuit' wares. This suggests that the Japanese were consciously catering to contemporary western taste for early Qing dynasty Chinese ceramics.
