Plate
1989 (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
Plate, potted from thick, heavy, blue-white porcelain. Of flat form, upturned at the edge to a straight rim. The foot is stepped on the inside edge, and is bored with three holes for suspension; it is thus more of a decorative plaque than a true plate. The front surface is painted in overglaze, dark pink, with a scene of a thick, tangled forest, beneath whose branches can be seen three deer. The theme of gnarled trees and deer ("auspicious" creatures) is traditional, but the treatment and painting of the scene makes a departure from tradition. Beneath the trees to the lower right is the signature 'Yangxian' with seal 'Yu'. On the base is a six-character overglaze red sealmark "China, made at Jingdezhen".
