Place of origin |
Bowl for washing, wood covered in gold nashiji (irregularly-shaped flakes of gold suspended in clear or yellowish lacquer resembling pear skin), the deep sides of the bowl curving out towards the top before turning sharply in, together with a pair of handles with scalloped edges on either side, edged with metal mounts decorated with a floral scroll and a mon consisting of eight small balls surrounding one larger one. The bowl is decorated with bamboo and blossoming plum trees which grow up and over the outside of the bowl from the bottom of the foot, with the design of bamboo leaves continuing on to the upper surface of the handles, scattered with mon formed by a pair of sparrows within two bamboo stems curved to form a circle, in gold and silver takamaki-e(a maki-e technique in which parts of the design are raised by adding clay or charcoal powder to the lacquer), with gold and silver kirikane (metal foil cut to various shapes and individually set into lacquer, often as a mosaic), with the underside of the handles also being in nashiji. The bowl interior is decorated with water plants and stylised water in gold and silver hiramaki-e (metal powder sprinkled on to a lacquer design before it hardens so that it is in low relief) on a black lacquer ground with sparse nashiji, the same ground also being used on the underside of the foot.
