Rice container and lid
Plain sugi (cryptomeria) with bamboo binding.
Of circular section, widening very slightly upwards. The sides are formed from a number of vertical butt-joined curved pieces. the recessed base is made from a single piece. The bottom of the sides is cut to form three large feet. The sides are bound with two rings of plaited bamboo. The circular lid is formed from two butt-joined pieces with a narrow border cut away beneath to form a projecting base which fits into the container. There are two parallel handles at right angles to the grain and join, dovetailed into the lid. Their tops are slightly curved, their end edges are bevelled and their ends follow the curve of the side of the lid.
